Chita Rivera: The Dancer's Life offers audiences a rare look into that moment when great musical numbers in the theater were born, as related and performed by the woman for whom they were created--the ultimate Broadway "gypsy." The show, featuring an 11-member company, takes the audience on a tour through landmark creations in the American theater and also features new songs Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty.
Chita Rivera: The Dancer's Life, written by Terrence McNally and directed and choreographed by Graciela Daniele, received mixed to positive reviews when it opened at the Old Globe. In his review, The Los Angeles Times' Lewis Segal wrote: "Nothing breaks the powerful connection between the audience and this battle-scarred, self-effacing, indomitably triumphant performer. And when she describes the choreographers who inspired her--Jack Cole, Peter Gennaro, Jerome Robbins and Bob Fosse--while a silhouetted line of dancers isolates the components of each dance style, the show reaches absolute glory."
